Life's dignity subsumes everything – biological/physical, social, economic, legal, and cultural. Every Constitution's egalitarian promise is solemn in affirming the overriding constitutional concern to secure the individual's dignity. The pursuit and assurance of dignity is just the thing we need to ensure for all. In a way, the idea of dignity is 'applies' to all forms of life on earth, respect for the planet!

Human dignity calls for a global yet individual-focused development thrust that liberates individuals from critical dependence on society and state. Same-quality education, health, and necessary professional resources are required to ensure the same systemic dignity.

Fortunately, for the first time in human history, the provision of same-quality education, health, and microenterprise can be guaranteed - facelessly and globally. No child, and adult, need to depend on the local, even national, society and government for the three pre-requisites.

The three won't materialise simultaneously for individuals and the 'providers.' Happily, same-quality education is the first among the equal three - it is the substrate for the other two, especially in these most intense sci-tech times.

That's the genesis of Cipher Alchemy, a global initiative that will ensure same-quality educational resources and opportunities to EVERY FAMILY (children need 'family-like adults and context').

Cipher Alchemy is focused on creating the most disruptive change in educational resources. We will ride on the school system while nurturing families with uniquely learner-centered resources. Technology, per se, is not a big deal in our disruptive change; recontextualised quality in schools, new-genre textbooks, experiences and activities, assessments and evaluations, and learners' community are the axes of change.

Lest it is misunderstood, we must record our favourable assessment of schools in making the industrial society come real and midwifing an ever-growing middle class across the world. However, schools are stuck in time and maybe the biggest stumbling block in contributing to the blossoming of the next transformation – the knowledge society, the 'artificially intelligent society.' Yet, schools are not going away anywhere and would steadily transform to be meaningful in society's knowledge.

Expectedly, we have developed a two-pronged strategy –

  1. A school-driven quality revolution for the 'last child.'
  2. A family-centered quality revolution for ALL the children and adults (ignoring the development of parents has been the school system's severest flow; children are products of their environment).

Education is a whole gamut of things. To be accurate, everything is comprehensively educational till early adulthood (coinciding with the undergraduate years). Nothing has changed in this understanding of education or is expected to change. And that's the nature of human development – person-specific, limitless, multi-dimensional, socially and culturally tempered, technologically coloured, etc.

However, 'Education @ school' has also become as sweeping and 'immeasurable,' something it must not be. School education is supposed to be formal, organised, limited in scope and attention, delivered by 'experts,' and duly negotiated/mandated. Schools have also come to do 'everything' – academic, social, cultural, socio-emotional, life skills, career support, etc.

Naturally, the expansive education in schools has come at a massive cost to children, families, societies, and humanity – schools are struggling to survive under their own assumed burden. And this is not what schools were created for – they were only to focus on academics. We can well imagine the state of school education in the current scenario – what level of quality may be expected from the institution on goals which have multiplied a few times when it has 'failed' the majority of its students in the past 200 years in its core goal (academics).

In a way, the most pronounced crisis in school education is the low sentiments around it – schools in most nations are suffering from 'little expectations,' low quality, highly supplemented, stressed parenting and lost happy childhood years. Raising the sentiments around schools may be the first institutional change goal – families and societies must experience quality education impact on children, success in some domain of knowledge/skill in EVERY student!

Proudly, another big inventive step by Cipher Alchemy is to let the formal education – at school and home – assuredly succeed in one such knowledge/skill for EVERY child! And that domain at Cipher Alchemy is Mathematics!

It took us years to zero down to mathematics as the domain that has the potential to be the one in which ALL children and adults can succeed, without exception. The success of adults is one cornerstone for the success of EVERY child. We worked on all curricular subjects for years – art, music, math, environmental science, languages, science, physical education, dance – for K-8. Slowly mathematics emerged as the potential subject to anchor the school transformation.

However, 'Education @ school' has also become as sweeping and 'immeasurable,' something it must not be. We do now have the math books that parents (and children) can transact on their own. The books have extraordinarily simplified mathematics – teachers and schools have no advantage in teaching mathematics. All parents, and children, will now succeed if they wish to.

An interesting limitation of the school system is that the community/parents have no real choice for their children. All schools are too 'local' in geography, resources, teachers, career discovery, competition, culture, achievements, etc.

The need for truly 'international schools' needs no emphasis, as is and in these times of global village.

The Liberal School (TLS) is the world's first global school! Any family can enroll to learn at TLS. Education in school years need not be any compromise now for all families. TLS would evolve to offer the best of global and local knowledge.

Schools across the world are under stress. The institution's DNA has fairly grown out for the times, and the school education system's frailties are out in the open.

More sweat by educators is not the answer. The current reliance on textbooks, assessment, external training, lesson planning, technology, etc., have failed us big. We urgently need breakthrough innovation.

The breakthrough innovation is making schools a learning institution, not an improved teaching institution. Learning how to know, not just plainly, 'knowing' is the new quality imperative in a world that is changing by the day.

Principal need to be the lead, model learner, the change agent in a school. Principals are the ONLY hope for schools to survive in the current form. If principals can't turn around learning, schools will make way for 'alternate schools,' maybe later, not sooner, but certainly in this decade. A lot is now happening in the entire ecosystem of schools that will force transformation in schools.

QCALL offers to mentor school leaders focused on confidence and capacity building and the domain knowledge on all K-8 'subjects,' starting with Maths, in a phased manner. In turn, school leaders handhold teachers and subject heads in rediscovering their academics and access new-genre learner-centered textbooks that support outstanding quality education.
